Review: Mad Hatter Costume

September 29, 2010

Mad Hatter Costume from

It’s the end of September and the only thing I can think about is Halloween. It’s the perfect  time to dress up into outfits you wouldn’t normally wear and no one can look at you with a funny expression on their face. As someone who adores Halloween I try to start my quest to find the perfect costume, candies, and decorations early.

While I liked the Mad Hatter’s shiny flared satin turquoise and stretchy velvet black design concept the little flaws are what left me continuing my search for the perfect outfit. I’ll just lay my problems out for you.

  • Awkward shoulder sleeves – No joke. It’s as if there was a misalignment with the sewing machine. The problem is difficult to explain so I hope you can appreciate my even awkward-er video trying to explain it.
  • No Breast Support – This was a big issue for me and the ultimate killer to this outfit. There is absolutely no breast support in this outfit. It is just a elastic band on the top to somewhat gather the material. I don’t know about you but I like my breasts to be perky, especially in an outfit that is supposed to make me feel/look hot. So you’ll definitely need to wear a bra if you desire any sort of support.
  • Thigh high my ass – I won’t lie, this pissed me off. I feel cheated, jipped, enraged! All by a pair of opaque tights that are only thigh high if you are six years old. What’s even worse is that they are not even KNEE high. *sigh* The included tights with the cute satin black bow reach mid-calf height with no stretch. Absolute advertising lie.
  • Tacky Hat – Included in the package I knew this hat was coming but I still wasn’t prepared for the tackiness of it. It’s huge and really takes away from the balance of this outfit. I think Coquette would have been better off doing one of those mini-hatter hats that sit on a headband.

The flaws are just something that someone should be aware of before buying and somewhat fixable. The problem is that you shouldn’t have to fix them. It’s not that I hate the dress, because honestly I do like it. I think it’s quite cute and the black lace trim on the ends of the skirt really adds a touch of elegance.

So can I recommend it? Sure as long as you’re okay with the flaws. While it’s not the outfit I want to wear for Halloween this year it is one that I find cute and decent enough to wear on odd occasions and practice photo-ops. As you can see, I’m a horrible model. The trouble is trying to be the photographer AND model who’s running around in 5” heels for the first time to get a decent shot, so you’re stuck with that photo.

Sizing note: There isn’t a size chart on-site but you can find it here at Coquette (the manufacturer) to help you order the size you need. For this outfit you’ll really only need to worry about the waist and bust measurements. The velvet material makes it quite stretchy which I think attributes to the fact that it worked perfectly with my measurements. I’m sure you think I’m STRETCHING the outfit out, but I’m not it’s actually a pretty perfect fit.

This looks so cute in the pictures. It sucks that it’s not quite right and that there are so many issues.

As a side note: Your voice is really cute. =0) Also, I’m so happy you fit into the large.

I’ve learned over the years not to trust Coquette lingerie and costumes – they never quite impress the way I’d like them to 😦

Funnily enough I used to work for a branch of the company, even then I wasn’t impressed. You might have better luck with Seven Til Midnight, Be Wicked Costumes or Mystery House (they’re all much better quality)

Fantastic review by the way!! 🙂

I keep looking at getting this for Jor, but the lack of breast support would probably be a big problem. I’m sad it didn’t work well though – it looks like such a gorgeous outfit. 😦

I got one of the Vampire costumes from Coquette, and I have a few of the same complaints on it – The shoulder straps are weird, and it has the exact same (As in none) breast support. I like it, but I don’t love it like I had hoped I would, especially not with the price tag it came with.
